Swim team is not swim lessons. Although each swimmer will improve their swimming skills through competitive swimming, the swim team is not staffed to provide a great deal of individual instruction to small children. To be a member of the team, each young child should meet a minimum skill level (they do not have to be good swimmers). The pool does offer swim lessons if needed.
As a general rule, 6 and Under age group swimmers should be able and willing to jump from the side of the pool, go under water, and come up swimming (moving) unassisted. Age group 7 & 8 swimmers should be able to dive (sort of) from the starting blocks and swim the length of the pool without assistance or stopping. Swimmers ages 7 to 18 should be able to swim unassisted before joining the team.
If the coaches feel that a child is not ready for the swim team, they will talk to the parents and suggest individual swim lessons for the child before returning to the team. The coaches will make the final determination of a swimmer's suitability for the swim team.
